The upcoming Intel and AMD processors will likely need a different motherboard. You might want to consider another ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero or explore compatible options for your current setup.

Intel 10th Gen CPUs are only compatible with Z490. This model isn't backward compatible with older generations since the socket has changed from LGA1151 to LGA1200. It seems Intel may support 11th Gen compatibility for Z490, but details beyond that are uncertain. For AMD, there are reports suggesting Ryzen 4000 could work backwards with B450, X470, B550, and X570. However, it's possible the Ryzen 4th Gen will be the last to support AM4, especially after AMD's shift to 5nm around mid-to-late 2021 for the Ryzen 5th Gen. This remains speculation. If you need a processor now, Z490 with 10th Gen is a solid choice, as backward support is likely for at least the 11th Gen. With AMD, the answer depends on how long you plan to wait for new releases. As mentioned before, if rumors hold true and AMD updates, AM5 for Ryzen 5th Gen using 5nm could eliminate compatibility concerns, requiring a wait until Ryzen 5000 arrives with its new socket. This should provide some clarity.

I'm counting on the 10900k, hoping it arrives sooner than the 9900ks. I'm looking for a strong option to go with an RTX Titan.
