Hi everyone, I’m planning to set up a home Wi-Fi system for our new house. We’re constructing it from scratch, with two floors and Ethernet ports scattered throughout the building. The main hub is on the second floor, connected to a central panel upstairs. Right now we use an Eero router provided by our ISP, which has been running on a hard wired connection to an older router for better coverage and to power my gaming PC. This setup isn’t very user-friendly for me, so we have Ethernet ports in several rooms.

The main challenge is managing two separate Wi-Fi networks—it’s a bit cumbersome. Still, the improved signal now reaches all areas of the house, which is great for hosting game nights. Previously, the game room suffered from weak signals far from the original router.

My idea is to install two routers—one upstairs and one downstairs. Ideally, I can connect the downstairs unit directly to the Ethernet ports, leveraging existing hardware. I’m still unsure if that’s the optimal setup. For now, the hardwired connections will handle my gaming PC, my wife’s work PC, and possibly an Xbox. Other devices like IoT gadgets are minimal, and we mainly need Wi-Fi for phones, laptops, and security systems.

If the house gets fiber optic internet, it could make a big difference. I’m a bit new to networking, so I hope my explanation is clear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend using Ubiquiti equipment. A professional setup with a Pro SE device. Include one router, a switch, and multiple access points. All access points should be ceiling-mounted and hardwired. Their website features a layout tool for planning.
