I don’t see an easy way to eliminate the screws except by using a tool that creates metal fragments. To prevent chips from sticking to the MOBO, cover it with a sheet of paper bigger than the board—remove the CPU cooler, cards, etc.—and make small openings for the screws. Secure the edges with double-sided tape so chips don’t transfer. For removal, use a screw extractor; it’s best to choose the Grabit model. It features a tiny drill bit and a grabber end. Place the bit in a drill with the bit facing out, then run the drill backward to make a cone-shaped hole at the screw head. Sometimes the bit alone will loosen it. If not, flip the bit, press the grabber firmly, and slowly turn the drill to extract the screw. After removal, clear all chips before taking off the paper. I’ve successfully removed stripped screws with a Grabit without failure. I also use an 18v impact driver for its hex chuck, though a 1/2" drill works fine. Keep the speed low and maintain pressure once the bit starts turning to avoid stripping. Using the right size driver matters—many opt for a Phillips head that’s too small. Don’t over-tighten, and ensure your screwdriver matches the correct size. Most M.2 SSDs benefit from a cooler, particularly those mounted flat on a MOBO with limited ventilation. Many still require one for optimal performance.

Take a narrow rubber band and place it around the tip of the screwdriver. Or try using the edges of a pair of scissors. It sometimes helped me. For next time, opt for a Phillips head instead of a hex, or if you're unsure, choose better screws!

I've already set it up in the other port, but I spent a lot on the motherboard, so I'm planning to use the one under the cover for a future M.2 SSD purchase.

The outcome won’t look very appealing, yet those screws aren’t designed to be durable, so you can likely remove the threads by just applying force with your hands. Once done, the screw will be out. In either case, the hole won’t work anymore.
