Screen turns black upon login, showing only the cursor and the Windows key.
Hey everyone, I’m reaching out during a tough time. Just yesterday I transferred my Desktop to the living room to connect it with my TV for a VR experience. It didn’t log in properly. After navigating through the BIOS and normal Windows startup, it just displayed a blank screen. I can move the cursor and press the Windows key to open the start menu in Windows 10, but that’s all. I’ve faced similar issues before with explorer.exe—restarting via Task Manager worked, but now I can’t even open it. I’ve tried running antivirus scans, edited the registry, and even let the system sit without changes. I’m not ready to reinstall Windows, but I really need your assistance. Microsoft seems like a dead end right now, and I’d appreciate any advice or solutions you can share. Thanks in advance if anyone knows how to help!
Have you attempted to link back to a monitor? It could be the television that's causing the issue...
I've attempted screen switching, but it only displays a blank screen with just the cursor. Pressing the Windows key opens the Start menu. Are there any commands you can enter during the recovery state to restart Windows Explorer or the desktop environment?
I can log into the account, but the right click ability is nil. As for the Task Manager Aspect? Dead end as well. I can do the Ctrl Shift Esc; Nothing. I do the Ctrl Alt Delete, select Task Manager, nothing. I can tell its initializing and its awaiting me to do something with it, but I can't see it. But I can boot into Safe Mode with no problems (Shocker) but I am confused. I look at my Event Viewer and it doesn't show me anything that corresponds with either explorer.exe or the Desktop Environment. Thank you so much for continuing to stick with this thread, it really means alot. I knew I shouldve just come here and asked for help rather than pedal around Microsoft or the Internet to see if I can get help.
It's odd you're sharing this now, but I get it. I can switch tabs easily if programs are running smoothly and I noticed my Task Manager showing up in the Alt tab. It seems my GPU isn't being detected at all, maybe because I deleted drivers earlier and Windows just installed the default one. I plan to remove everything related to Nvidia, including my MSI Rtx 2060, and try it again. Should I also turn off the internet connection to prevent Windows from reinstalling? Thanks for the helpful advice!
It seems Nvidia blocks uninstalling its software in Safe Mode. You're stuck and looking for alternatives. EDIT: I can't remove the remaining Nvidia items, and I'm at a standstill. What options do I have? Updated July 8, 2020 by DeltaGammaXray
