The setup includes an xfx radeon 6870 with 1gb GPU, a q6600 processor, and 4gb RAM. Adding 8gb of RAM would significantly boost performance.

Actually, nothing seems to be working anymore for this system. You might want to seriously think about upgrading the whole setup. A GPU upgrade could make a bigger difference than anything else.
