I was playing games and during a mid-session both screens went dark (colors faded, fans still ran). After restarting the fans, lights turned back on but no display appeared. When I mounted it on the TV it showed an HDMI connection but nothing visible. The motherboard is a Meg Unify X570 with two Corsair Vengeance 16GB RAM sticks, Ryzen 9 3900X, and GeForce 3090 Vision OC 24GB graphics card. It uses a 1000W gold-certified power supply from Corsair. I recently updated the graphics drivers. Since my CPU lacks built-in graphics, troubleshooting is challenging. I replaced RAM, tried single-board setups, swapped GPUs, used different PCIe slots, cleaned components, reset CMOS via the motherboard button and battery replacement. Tested various ports with different monitors and cables (both DP and HDMI). My specs include a 2-pack of Corsair Vengeance, 16GB RAM, Ryzen 9 3900X, and a power supply rated for 1000W. I haven’t overclocked anything. The PC has been running for about two years with no problems—only the GPU is newer (~1 year old) and purchased secondhand, without any warranty. I have sufficient cooling, and my GPU typically stays under 85% load (around 83), while the CPU rarely exceeds 70%, mostly around 60 during heavy use.
I suggest directing it to a colleague for evaluation on a different platform. This will help pinpoint the issue more accurately.
This was my initial thought too, but after trying my friend's brand new graphics card in two different PCIe slots it looks unlikely. (If you meant this wasn’t the case, his card has the same problem). I can't test my GPU because none of my friends have a PSU powerful enough.
I attempted to update the BIOS after completing all other troubleshooting steps. While the BIOS kept flashing, I received an error code "00" on the motherboard that persisted until I restarted the system. After rebooting, it changed to "d6". Then I tried a different BIOS version; during flashing it was still "00", but once I rebooted, it stabilized at "d0". I'm beginning to suspect the motherboard might be damaged.
Assume we're discussing current power supplies. Units from fifteen years prior behave differently. Don't be sure what kind of PSU your friends use, but you can quickly check the GPU by starting their machine with your GTX 3090 on a smaller power supply. The suggested PSU for your card is 750W. If the card struggles with the PSU's capacity, the system will shut down because it hits protection limits. That's the main issue. Running a test to see if the GPU starts and runs Windows without games or anything is straightforward. A 450W PSU would work just fine for such a check. If your friend's PC already has an Nvidia card, it's easier; otherwise, driver problems might arise, but that shouldn't affect the basic test.
