You encountered a tricky setup situation. Your system is powerful with a 3570K processor, GTX 970 graphics, and plenty of RAM. The main hurdle is getting Ubuntu to boot properly despite the Nvidia driver issues you read about. Since you're not confident in Linux yet, consider trying a simpler distro like Lubuntu or Xubuntu, which have easier installation guides. If you're open to it, look into using a live USB with a minimal desktop environment—this lets you test Ubuntu without affecting your main system. Alternatively, you could explore lightweight Linux options that require less overhead. Just be sure to back up everything before making changes.

No, pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 does not display a screen.

I attempted that and it didn’t work. The nomodeset seems to resolve the problem, but I’m still unable to log in.

Can you do Ctrl+Alt+F2 with nomodeset on? If that doesn't work, could be possible that the Ubuntu image was corrupted in some way, or something's wrong with 16.10. Try 16.04 LTS if all else fails.

I'm having trouble installing it and keep hitting the install button. I added the boot flags by pressing E, but I'm not sure how to do it manually now.

I installed elementaryOS on my old MSI GS60 6QE. I deleted 'quiet' and 'splash' and appended 'nomodeset' at the end of the line starting with Linux. Once the installation is complete, press win+T and execute sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. This should initiate the process, as I faced a similar problem with Arch and Xubuntu.
