Screen appears black on startup, need assistance—I've tried all possible fixes.
Hi there. A few weeks back I assembled a gaming PC, and since the first start-up, I've faced a persistent problem that's really frustrating. After checking online resources and using AI support, it looks like a cold boot issue. The trouble arises every time I turn the machine on after it's been off for a long time—like overnight. When I press the power button, everything powers up: fans spin, LEDs light up, the mouse works, and the AIO cooler activates—but the screen remains completely dark. The monitor connected via DisplayPort gets power, its backlight illuminates, yet nothing appears on the display. Only resetting the case’s reset button resolves it, after which the PC restarts and functions perfectly throughout the day, even if I leave it off for 30 minutes or an hour. The problem only emerges after an extended shutdown. Additionally, during the initial boot failure (screen stays black with no cursor or output), the VRAM debug LED on the motherboard stays illuminated. This light is located in the bottom left corner of the board. My specifications: Motherboard – Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX; CPU – AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D; RAM – CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 32GB (2x16GB); GPU – 5070 ti (same issue with my older 3060 ti); PSU – CORSAIR RM850e; Case – Phanteks XT Pro Ultra Cooling; Thermalright AQUA ELITE 360 V3.
Troubleshooting steps I've attempted (without success): I'm using the EXPO profile to run RAM at full speed, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the RAM problem since I've tested with another stick and disabled EXPO without results. I've toggled Memory Context Restore in BIOS, double-checked all connections, adjusted RAM voltage slightly, updated BIOS, refreshed drivers, and installed the latest Windows 10 updates. I reset the CMOS by removing the battery, but the issue lingered. One more point: when the PC boots normally after a restart, it briefly powers off before restarting again before launching into Windows. Is this typical behavior for this motherboard? Sorry if this thread feels chaotic—I tried many things in the past week and don’t recall everything clearly. I’m starting to feel discouraged, but any advice would mean a lot!
Check if your motherboard is covered under warranty and consider obtaining a new one.
Tomorrow is the final opportunity to request an Amazon refund, I’ll give it a shot.
You recently received an MSI 5070 SHADOW 2X OC and encountered similar problems. Your screen powers on when the welcome window appears, but you can't view the post-screen or loading screens during a cold boot. After rebooting, you can access the post-screen and BIOS settings, which isn't possible on a cold start. You suspect a display port issue. You've tested a single HDMI connection and still see the post-screen, but switching to HDMI and DisplayPort simultaneously results in no display until the welcome screen loads. Your PC specs are listed, including the graphics card, power supply, and operating system details.
I encountered the same problem where I would see a black screen (the PC turned on but I couldn't view it) and only saw it after opening Windows. It looks like the fix came after updating the GPU firmware: Geforce GTX 700 Series - 10 Series link, Geforce RTX 30 Series help, and Geforce RTX 4080/4090 support. Please let me know if this assists you.
guys an update after a bit of time. I still haven't fixed this. It's 99% a faulty gpu, PC does NOT POST when i turn it on after many hours, it's not that simplt the video signal isn't coming out. I tried swapping the whole motherboard / ram / psu but nothing worked. Had the same issue putting my 5070ti into my old pc so yeah that pretty much confirms it. Just something strange happened the other week, for 1 time it booted normally, completely random. That gave me hope but it was crashed again the following day. I'm still using my pc normally and it works fine, i just have to boot it 2 times when i start the day.. Only thing i could do since i can't rma the gpu.
Additional note: sometimes the system launches without any issues, like it has been working smoothly for five consecutive days after being powered off completely overnight. I’m really puzzled by this situation; it still confuses me, but I think it’s just a temporary issue that will return eventually. I have no clue what’s causing it—maybe a GPU problem? If anyone encounters this in the future or finds a quick fix, please share it.
