SATA connections and data locations
After upgrading to a GPU, I wanted to organize my cables better. I have an M.2 SSD with my operating system and a 6TB HDD for storage and games. The main concern is whether moving the HDD to another SATA slot will cause issues with Windows 10 finding files or other problems. My Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (Wi-Fi) motherboard should handle it fine since all ports are SATA 3.
Verify the drive letter and confirm it matches after reconnecting it.
It functions with any SATA port when there are no hardware issues and the letter stays consistent. Even if the letter shifts, simply revert it to the original one. The system is designed to handle drives being unplugged and plugged back in smoothly. The operating system recognizes file locations on the drive, maintaining the same directory structure and file presence, allowing smooth access once reconnected.
The operating system identifies the disks using their UUID, not the SATA port. After BIOS, the sequence of connections is irrelevant.
