This approach seems impractical. If the goal is to make the damage undetectable, using a static IP on another network would be a better solution. The local internet connection wouldn't function properly.

With access to his laptop, you can turn off the Ethernet adapter. (Just right-click to enable or disable in: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections)

It's tricky because running Windows Networking Diagnostics can often restore it automatically. Just open the wired icon on your desktop and it will show it's off, then turn it back on.

Just grab his damaged hard drive. The teenager likely won’t realize it’s gone, and you can claim you had another one on hand to ‘repair’ his faulty one if things get tough.
