Hello, everyone. I still use an X58 setup and am looking for ways to get the most out of it. Due to high costs in my area, replacing the whole system isn’t feasible right now. Here are the details about my machine:

- CPU: Intel Xeon W3690 (6 cores / 12 threads) @ 3.46–3.73 GHz (original speeds)
- Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition
- Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
- RAM: 12 GB at 1333 MHz (3x Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G)
- GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 (6 GB, supercloned)
- PSU: 750 W

I’ve seen some YouTube videos showing comparable gaming performance to Ryzen 5 3600 or i7 8700K in X58 Xeons through overclocking. So, with this hardware, I have a few questions about gaming:

1) At 1920x1080 resolution (60 FPS), especially for CS:GO at 144 Hz, do you think the CPU becomes a bigger limiting factor? Would pairing it with an RTX 2070 Super give decent results at 1440p or even 4K?
2) How much faster would I expect the game to run if I overclock this CPU? Would higher resolutions like 1440p or 4K require more performance gains?
3) If I upgrade my RAM from 1333 MHz to 1600 MHz or more, what kind of boost can I anticipate? Is it worth it?
4) My RAM is standard with no extra cooling or gamer features. Can it be overclocked?
5) For newer games and resolutions above 1080p, would I need to increase my RAM from 12 GB to 24 GB?
6) This platform works best with triple-channel memory. Are there any special tips for buying new RAM?
7) Is the DX58SO compatible with overclocking?

The main issue with these CPUs is their weak single-core speed. Even after overclocking, my single-core performance remains similar to a 6th generation laptop i7 in my Thinkpad. If your games or programs run smoothly on multiple cores, you'll see a big boost when you increase the clock speed. You might still get some improvement with single-core tasks, but unless you're utilizing all cores, these older Xeons aren't worth keeping.

They're clearly showing signs of wear. It was a fairly affordable upgrade from the i7 920 to this Xeon model around late 2018. I'm mainly a casual gamer who mostly plays single-player titles. The only games that really benefit from higher refresh rates are CS:GO and some older Battlefield entries like Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. Given how costly PC components can be now, I figured it was worth trying to boost performance further. Another question: if I upgraded my GTX 1060 to a 6 GB model, would switching platforms to something with a Ryzen 5 3600 or i5 10400 give noticeable gains? I'm aiming for around 60-75 frames per second, which is why I considered adjusting my X58 setup. Thanks!

Yes, you'd do that too, though it varies by game. I recognize this in titles like GTA V and BeamNG where the CPU becomes a limiting factor.

For my Xeon X5675, running at 4.5GHz for years, I have a clear view when comparing it to my R5 3600 at 3440x1440p with the same GPU (1080Ti). It’s CPU-heavy tasks where the Xeon falls short, though that doesn’t affect me much since I don’t do intense work. I’m sure there’s a slight FPS difference, but without a counter, it’s hard to judge.

Pros of X58 overclocked setups: extra PCIe slots for upgrades, more USB3 and SATA3 options. Cons: no AVX support (so Windows MR VR won’t work), extra heat, higher power use, single-core CPU performance. If you need USB3 or solid SATA3, add a card. For a reliable setup without overclocking, X58 is outdated.

This idea is really intriguing. I haven’t attempted overclocking before, but I’m willing to give it a try. If I do, should I adjust any settings on my RAM? As I mentioned earlier, my current RAM is quite basic. I’ve also read about NVMe in X58 with that particular SSD—it could be a promising option. Would this be suitable for use as the bootable drive? talk about the sata adapter for nvme m.2? could this offer a boost over a standard ssd? you're currently using a pny 240gb with an x5570 at 4.04gz, 12gb ddr3 triple channel at 728mhz, but you can't speed it up without instability. You're considering the x55 series 45nm on nehalem and the x56 series 32nm westmere. I think this might be what's holding you back. When building machines in this chipset, it makes sense to produce more units rather than investing heavily in one.
