I have been planning to upgrade roughly 12 systems to a single version of windows os. Looking at licensing options, I am slightly pissed that there isn't a better way unless I misread something. So here is what I think I know right now, please correct where I am wrong. If I buy standalone keys for each machine, I pay roughly $175 for box version of Windows 8.1 Pro. With the release of Windows 10 it can be upgraded for free (within a year), assuming microsoft sticks to its word. The downside is having a separate key for each machine. Volume licensing can be either for certain number of activations (using MAK) or for multiple active machines (KMS) With volume licensing using MAK for activation there is a limit of how many times a key can be used to activate a system. After that limit it is done for. With KMS, at least 25 desktop or 5 server systems are needed to active desktop or server systems respectively. If I understand right, KMS key is for specific amount of system activated at the same time. Is that so?
