I use Windows 11 Pro with a Dell XPS 15 9520. Whenever an update appears in the bottom right, I either install it immediately or switch to pause mode for one to three weeks. This happens because I often leave my laptop on overnight. During those times, updates can trigger automatically, causing my external monitors to shut down frequently. Recently, I've experienced issues where a pause was accidentally set and then forgotten, leading to unexpected restarts and login prompts. I suspect the system attempted a Dell firmware update during such periods, which may have caused problems the next day. To avoid these disruptions, I usually choose to update manually or pause updates temporarily.

I’ve seen updates appear in the bottom right and then pause for several weeks. Now I regularly check for updates and notice both a Windows cumulative update and a Dell firmware update are pending. There was another update showing a required restart, so I completed it, re-entered my BitLocker PIN twice, and finally logged in with my Windows 11 Pro password.

When I clicked "Windows Update," the preview stated that a 2025-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 was available for 64-based systems (KB5053656). It offered download and installation options. The interface now confirmed I was up to date. Should I just download and install this update now, or wait?

I’ve noticed that disabling automatic updates works well for me, but I’m unsure if it’s the best long-term plan. I recall setting pause durations in the past—sometimes one week, sometimes three weeks. How do I set this as my default? Is there a way to adjust the pause time automatically?

I also want to know if turning updates on by default is recommended. I’ve turned them off, but should that be changed? What’s the standard setting?

Turn off automatic updates. This prevents the system from restarting automatically while you're not there. A few updates may revert your settings to defaults, so you'll need to verify your preferences whenever a restart is required.
