I recently purchased a brand-new ASUS motherboard and don’t have a CPU at the moment. I need to keep it safe for about four to five months. The humidity in my area is high—around 80–90%. Without a dehumidifier or air conditioner, I’m seeking the best method to protect it. Right now, the board remains fully sealed in its original packaging. To add extra safeguards, I plan to place the box inside a thick polythene bag and seal it tightly. Before sealing, I intend to include silica gel packets around the bag to absorb moisture. Regarding your question, are silica gel packets safe for storage? If they pose any risk, I’ll avoid using them; otherwise, they could be a good option.

They don't cause harm and are used by millions daily. You might already have one in your motherboard case. Probably best not to buy unless you're getting a great deal. Large time gaps can hurt your budget, especially with new items. Save money or purchase everything at once if possible. If you really need it, consider storing it with silica gel packs—high humidity is likely anyway.

It'll be okay. If you made that machine yesterday, you wouldn't need silica gel packets in the box would you? Plus, these tiny items tend to run out of use before they reach you.

With a vacuum sealer or even a big ziplock, you can simply wrap it in silica, close it tightly, and the silica will lower the moisture levels safely. You wouldn’t bother peeking inside. If you do open it, consider removing the CMOS battery—though the heat shrink wrap will still help protect it.

The packaging is built to withstand harsh shipping conditions, including ocean travel. It’s quite sturdy. Still, avoid purchasing parts without testing them until the return period ends. There’s a risk they might be out of date. Plus, technology costs are falling. Buying early means missing out on potential savings. Honestly, it could also speed up drying due to air movement and temperature changes.
