Hi, are HDMI cables backward compatible with earlier HDMI versions and sockets? You're considering an Xbox Series S for your monitor with a DisplayPort socket. Are there any differences between the two cables regarding gender symbols? Can you use a converter to connect them? I'm worried about stability issues if you use a higher HDMI version with an older cable. Thanks in advance.

Backwards compatible with previous versions? Yes.
Changing from HDMI to DP is possible using adapters, though many may not be of high quality. You'll need to conduct your own investigation.

Hey thanks alot for fast reply, will do thanks, I'm glad hdmi is ok with older versions. There is a woman man thing with old VGA DVI cables back in the day as far as I remember, is that still valid for hdmi and display port too? I have to pay attention to that too before buying yes? (sorry if that sounds dumb)

It doesn't seem absurd at all. In the IT world we typically refer to them as 'male to female' connectors and even called the small adapter a 'gender bender'.
😉
Gender benders remain relevant, but it's important to ensure you obtain high-quality products. There are many low-quality converters/benders available on the market that can lead to problems or be outdated.

You're welcome for the thorough explanation, really appreciated. We already have an HDMI cable in one of the old boxes, labeled "high speed ethernet," which should work with the Xbox Series S. Now we just need a converter. My monitor is an old Dell model that runs at 60 Hz, and I usually use it for my PC. I've heard that PC monitors can also be used for console displays since we don't have a 4K or 8K TV. However, this monitor only has VGA and DisplayPort ports, so a converter is necessary. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but can I connect an HDMI cable with a converter on both ends? It seems like one HDMI cable might only fit in certain ways. My mind is a bit tangled since yesterday I was juggling all these connections, and prices here are quite high—everything has to be efficient and organized. Thanks again!

We also discovered an old ATI Radeon graphics converter from HDMI to DVI, and since my monitor supports DVI, we tested it by connecting the cable to my monitor. It worked successfully. I think this HDMI cable might also fit into the Xbox Series S port. Yay!
