Checking the manual, the Asus X470 Prime Pro can use two NVMe drives. I’m a bit puzzled about this setup. Right now I have one Samsung Evo 500GB NVMe card inside the M.2 heatsink (it should be running at x4). The specs say the second drive will only work at x2 or SATA, depending on your PC’s configuration. Does that mean one will run at x4 and the other at x2? I don’t expect to buy another NVMe card soon—I’m planning to switch to a cheaper QVO SSD for game storage, maybe sticking with EVO drives instead. It would be helpful to know this.

It's the top model nearest to the CPU. If not, it reaches PCIe 3.0 x2. You can verify this using Crystaldiskinfo in that scenario.

Closer to the CPU, as seen on CrystaldiskInfo. If you use a capture card like the Elgato HD60, it typically needs a PCIe x1 slot. Future SSDs in the other M.2 slot would likely stay in SATA mode unless otherwise specified.

Notice the capture card clearly. Maintain the PCIe device away from the PCIe x1 port adjacent to the top PCIe x16 slot. The second M.2 slot works fine with PCIe SSDs. Running in SATA mode will block a couple of SATA ports.

Based on the image you shared, your GTX 1070 is likely using a PCIe 16x1 configuration and may also fit into PCIe 1.1 or 1.2 slots. It’s possible it works in a PCIe 1.3 slot too, though that wouldn’t be required.

Check for PCIe1_3 port if available. PCIe16_2 might reduce GPU bandwidth by half because this board supports SLI. It doesn’t really matter as PCIe 3.0 x8 works fine for the 1070 and still helps with my OCD.

That’s a good point. For future-proofing, you’d likely need the PCIe 16x slot if using the 4K Elgato capture.

Opt for the 16_2 slot instead. 16_3 appears similar but only supports up to four lanes. Since it’s linked to the chipset together with other drives and devices, it must share this x4 bandwidth, which could affect its performance.

For an x1 card, you should place it in the third PCIe slot. If it's an x4, positioning it in the second PCIe slot allows both slots to operate at x8 each.
