Ryzen 9 9550X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with Unreal Engine and 2K gaming performance
Hi there, tech enthusiasts! I'm a VFX artist who works with Houdini and Unreal, and gaming is my main interest. I'm trying to design a new system that pairs an RTX 4070 Ti with 16GB RAM and a Ryzen processor. For gaming, I'm looking for recommendations. I noticed some users mention the Ryzen 9 9550X isn't ideal for gaming, especially struggling to hit 70-100 FPS at 1080p high settings. Others report decent performance on different benchmarks. This is making me a bit puzzled. I'm aiming for a 3D + 2K gaming setup and want to balance performance and visuals.
Unless you’re looking for a system that uses every single core of the 9950X—something rarely needed outside of gaming—save your budget and opt for the 9800X3D. Most games already run smoothly at 1440p, making the X3D clearly the top choice for performance.
It depends on several aspects: whether the game relies more on GPU or CPU during testing. For accurate CPU comparison, ensure the test isn't GPU-heavy—consider resolution and hardware used. Ideally, use the most powerful GPU available to avoid it becoming a bottleneck. The second video seems unsuitable for direct CPU performance evaluation. When running at higher resolutions with weaker GPUs, CPU differences may become less apparent. If future games demand more CPU power, look for chips with better scaling and core efficiency. Also, consider benchmarks beyond simple FPS averages; X3D can affect stability in specific scenarios. Try to gather as many varied tests as possible, focusing on realistic workloads. Choose the option that performs best under typical conditions, even if it isn't optimal in every single scenario.
It mainly relies on your graphics card and the titles you run. Several titles demand high GPU power at 1440p resolution, making CPU assistance ineffective... And 9800x3d definitely falls into that category!
I sense if you want the essentials, focus on those. The next generation will likely use more than 8 core chiplets for nearly every core, boosting your total and keeping it consistent across platforms. You might achieve higher performance with the 9950x by disabling 8 cores during gaming and reactivating them afterward for heavy tasks. If your GPU is under strain, you won’t notice any improvement from an x3d part.
As long as AMD keeps using two CCDs, there will likely be problems with gaming. That’s my current thought. You can keep an eye on the 9950x3d once it comes out, but I wouldn’t assume it would be completely free of gaming issues with two CCDs.
