Ryzen 9 3950X performance test and speed boost results
This might seem a simple or even silly question since I’m just starting out with overclocking. My CPU usually performs well considering its core count, and it handles multitasking, gaming, and rendering without overheating—thanks to my 360mm H150i AIO and the thermal grizzly kryonaut. Anyway, let's look at the question. I understand some basics about adjusting voltages and multipliers, increasing them gradually. I haven’t tried it on my own CPU, but I did it on a friend’s i9-9900K, which stayed steady at around 5Ghz with temperatures averaging 79°C using the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. Given its boost clock of 4.7Ghz, could it be possible to push it above that? And is it safe considering my cooling setup? I’m thinking about trying it after getting some feedback, even if the gains won’t be huge, just to learn more and enjoy the process during the home quarantine. Hope you’re having a great day and cheers! -Nova
Overclocking Intel or Ryzen often refers to the same concept, but results should be approached with realistic expectations. The 3950X can reach a peak boost of 4.7 on one core temporarily, but after that time it reduces its speed. With multiple cores, the overall improvement is smaller and eventually returns to the base frequency. Stable performance above 4.4 across all cores is challenging without specialized cooling solutions. For Ryzen, memory overclocking offers more flexibility, allowing performance gains up to 3200Mhz before the rate decreases. A DRAM calculator is highly recommended for planning. I believe I can reach around 4.35Ghz using my 360mm AIO or better. I’ll give it my all with the capabilities of my trusty AIO! From a memory standpoint, it’s not a huge concern since I have 3200Mhz CL16 and 3600Mhz CL14 RAM, and I’m fairly comfortable with RAM overclocking—something I’ve done several times on my friend’s i9.
