I recently upgraded from a 3800x to a 5800x3d. I see my temperatures rise to about 82-83 during games. My custom loop cooling setup makes me wonder if this is unusual. I don’t recall the 3800x getting that hot before. I haven’t tried undervolting yet, but I’m considering it. Any suggestions or tips to help keep temperatures down? Idle temps are around 38-42, I think.

The 5800x3d has a low TDP rating, making it suitable for custom loops unless it's exceptionally small. It's a 105W unit, which suggests the connection might not be optimal.

The radiator setup is also known, and yes, I've just cleaned it. At 80°C with a 360mm diameter on stock settings is typical for a choked case. If undervolting didn't help much, the contact issue seems likely to be the cause.

Have you considered reattaching the CPU module? It shouldn't be that warm. Plus, try lowering the voltage even if you don't need it—it can actually improve performance.

I have two rads, 360 and 240. The loop sends power from the GPU through the CPU to the rads. Before I filled it up, I checked that the block had good contact, but maybe I should drain it again to be sure. It spikes briefly for a second before dropping back down to the low 70s.

I'm also testing with an open-air setup, the cougar conquer setup.

Without rewatching reviews I believe this is normal. It's why they locked the x3d chips from overcooking due to thermal and voltage concerns. Idle temps looks fine so I don't think it's a mounting problem.

Your temperatures are within normal ranges. In Cyberpunk your 5800x3d reaches around 83°C, dropping to about 75°C with PBO2 Tuner. Some games can push it higher. For example, Minecraft may bring your CPU up to 85-90°C on a solo world with sufficient distance, and it will feel quite hot if the game is demanding. 3800x would likely sit between 70-80°C as well. What cooling components and fan speeds are you using for the CPU? It’s a good idea to set PBO2 Tuner to -25 across all cores. Since you’re on water, you might adjust the TDC and EDC a bit—currently I use 120 PPT, 80 TDC, and 110 EDC on an NH-D15. Feel free to experiment and see what works best for you.

I've read many reviews saying this chip runs very hot. I'm still getting the full boost frequency and it hasn't failed yet. If needed, maybe I didn't apply enough thermal paste? I used a spreader and made sure every area was covered before placing the block. Also, checked the star pattern while tightening for even tension. Right now in-game I'm seeing low 70s to 74, but it occasionally jumps into the low 80s.

I've got everything configured at PWM but it's just a push setting. The values are 360 radians and 240 radians.
