I've been using this 5800X for more than two months now, and it's heating up quite a bit. At default settings, around 15% load I reach about 70°C, but the Ryzen Master test automatically throttles it down to 3.9 GHz. In games it stays between 70°C and 85°C, possibly getting hotter at times. Has this been typical for this chip? The voltage stays near its maximum level. You've just re-applied thermal paste and installed a coolermaster water cooler. The coolant is over a year old—should I replace it to bring temperatures back within normal range, or is there another problem at play?
Stock performs well with these chips, great airflow in the case and cooler health. It’s a solid choice. (I’ve owned a 5800x since it launched.) When Zen3 came out, we noticed it ran hotter than before, which is normal—just make sure you’re not overheating. That said, the 5800x is the hottest model in the Zen3 series. Would you like to aim for scores around 15,000 in Cinebench R23? I’ve given this answer many times over the past couple of years since Zen3 was released. Robert Hallock, then AMD’s Technical Marketing Director, addressed temperature worries about Zen3 during its launch. If you want improvements, consider PBO and Curve Optimizer undervolting.
Reapply thermal paste thoroughly, ensuring full coverage of the entire headspreader. The actual cores on the 5800x are located in a few corners.
I’m not reaching over 15000 in Cinebench. On stock settings it shows 12775.
You can lower the voltage using a curve optimizer by applying a negative offset to each core or adjusting all at once. I suggest beginning with around -15 per core and increasing gradually. Eventually you’ll hit the lowest stability and crashes, so you’ll need to reduce it again—but you should reach at least -15 across all cores. Some high-end CPUs can remain stable near -30.
