I’m adjusting my expectations for AMD now. I’ll keep asking a few clarifying points. First, regarding core speed: compared to my old i7 7700K, the Ryzen 7 5800X maintains around 3200 MHz consistently, rarely dropping below it. It downclocks its cores to 800 MHz during idle, but I’m sticking with the same Balanced Power Plan as before. Is this typical? Second, I haven’t overclocked anything beyond PBO and auto settings. I’m new to AMD, so I’m not sure if overclocking will help much for such a strong processor. The official specs list a top speed of 4.7 GHz, yet I see it running smoothly up to 4.35–4.5 GHz and occasionally even higher. It seems stable across applications, and HW Info confirms this behavior. The PBO can adjust frequency within limits if conditions are right, but it’s running at 150 MHz below the stated maximum. See images below for details.
It appears the technology can exceed official AMD boost limits, as seen in listings where a 3800 MHz CPU reaches up to 4700 MHz. PBO might also push speeds beyond that with lower clocks. It seems this feature could be specific to certain motherboards, depending on temperature and power availability.
