You're considering upgrading your Ryzen 5 5600X to run on an ASUS B450-F motherboard that supports 2nd gen Ryzen. The BIOS update can enable 3rd gen support, but compatibility depends on the specific model. Check if your current board matches the supported Ryzen models and whether a BIOS upgrade is needed. For a 5000 series chipset, options like ASUS Z690 or MSI B550 are recommended for better performance and future-proofing.

Ryzen 1xxx lineup belongs to Zen, 2xxx features Zen+ (refresh), and 3xxx represents the second generation Ryzen. 5xxx is for the third-gen chips—don’t worry, AMD didn’t make this up. You should be able to run a 5000 series on that platform. Make sure your BIOS is updated to version 4007 or later.

AMD classifies 2000 series Ryzen processors as "second gen" https://www.amd.com/en/where-to-buy/2nd-gen-ryzen You'll see that the links go to product pages for 2000 series Ryzen (the ones that still work anyway) https://www.newegg.com/promotions/amd/18...cid=446894 If you follow marketing material for third gen, you are taken to pages for 3000 series. Here's the kicker: AMD stopped using "gen" as a marketing term (as far as I know) for 5000 series because yes, it is too confusing but let's not get bogged down in the details. Correct. The BIOS compatibility is listed on the site for the motherboard. Edited May 8, 2021 by Fasauceome
