Considering the upgrade, the Ryzen 5 3600x should be priced similarly to the Threadripper 1920X. Will quad channel memory still offer an edge, or is the third generation simply more advanced?

The 3700x plus a cheap x570 board offers the best value.

The threadripper board would likely be expensive, making the Ryzen 5 a more sensible choice. It would also perform much better in games.

Choose the Ryzen 5 now, and in about two years you might find a 3900X for around $400 or a 3950X.

It seems you're considering whether adding motherboards was worth it since X399 is costly. It looks like you were comparing the two CPUs and found it tricky to decide. From a budget perspective, the Ryzen 7 3700X seems like a more affordable choice.

I think the 1920X would likely outperform anything with multiple cores, though it's uncertain. Looking at that Bitwit video where even the second-gen TR gets crushed by the third-gen Ryzen, I’d say the boost in IPC would cover a lot of ground across many scenarios, even when core count isn’t the main factor. Still, some situations might favor raw core numbers more than speed per core.
