I own a new computer.
Intel i5-7400 3ghz
8g ram ddr5
Radeon rx480 4g.
I’m overclocking with watchman and valley at maximum settings.
With stock configurations I’m seeing temperatures around 70.
Just below the max overclock it reaches 85*.
After resetting back to stock I get lower temps, but even with higher fan speeds and max settings without changing GPU or memory, I’m still at 70*.
With overclocking I’m seeing an extra 400 score in valley and about 15 more frames per second.
Is it realistic to run the GPU at 85-88*? My goal is to maintain around 60fps in all games.

Is the voltage being increased beyond what is necessary?

Voltage remains set to auto. Power capacity is capped at 50. I reduced memory usage from 2.2k to 2k and adjusted temperature controls. Now everything operates smoothly at 2200 with a temperature of 75 degrees Celsius.

The fan speed is currently set to 5000 under load.
Is that excessive?
I play games infrequently, about an hour per day on average.

There should be improved airflow on that card, though it may struggle during extended gaming sessions.

Adjusting the fan speed to auto causes my GPU to drop to 861 from 1305. Is this intentional throttling?

merritt.howardii is asking about a situation where setting the fan speed to auto causes the GPU temperature to drop significantly, and they are seeking advice on whether this is intentional throttling or if a dedicated case fan could help.

Absolutely, increasing airflow around the GPU is essential for overclocking. Front-facing improvements and enhanced rear exhaust can also help.

I should mention that once the fan reaches 5krpms and maintains it, I receive the leafblower.
Keeping steady at 78* and 5k rpms, is this possible for an hour or two of gaming each day? I’ll have more loot available for upgrades in a few months.
Also, this is operating on the maximum settings.
