In my country, I can choose between a ZOTAC Twin Edge GeForce RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 for 535 euros and an XFX Radeon RX 9070 16GB Swift Triple Fan Gaming for 610 euros. These are the most affordable choices for these two cards.
Which one would you prefer?
Check the area if you can obtain 9070XT at a similar price to 9070, that would be a much better option.
Two main factors to consider. The 9070 has 16GB VRAM, giving it a longer lifespan before replacement is needed. The 12GB capacity is sufficient at present, but performance will soon require more. It offers better power efficiency in its original form. The other important point is that the 9070 XT BIOS can often be transferred to a 9070 card, unlocking up to 300W of output and making it capable of outperforming the 5070. I would recommend the 5070 if you plan to use it for workstation tasks. CUDA remains the more widely accepted standard.
I was facing a similar scenario in the USA recently. I had the choice between a 5070 for $605 or a 9070 which was available at $669. I chose the 9070xt because it was in stock for $699.
For gamers, the decision to pick the 9070xt was influenced by its availability—many videos on YouTube show it using 10-11GB of VRAM. Paying that much for a GPU suggests they aim to push more people toward upgrading.
Another clue is the rumors about a 5070 super with 18GB of VRAM. If that’s accurate, it implies the 9070 might be overpriced and Nvidia could be aware they need a stronger GPU in that segment.
For production tasks, the Nvidia card seems more suitable, but for gaming, sticking with the 9070 appears to be a smarter move if you plan to keep the card longer.
