RX 7800XT with hotspot and repaint capabilities
Morning team, have any one experienced problems with repasting a XFX RX 7800xt Merc? I was getting really hot—temperatures over 95°C after a single repaste using an Artic MX 4. It worked for a couple weeks before needing another try. Now I switched to the MX6, but it’s been spiking again after about a month. It’s not an overclocked build, so I’ve lowered the core clock and voltage by 10%. Anyone have a paste or tip that could help? I’m running the latest AMD 24.9.1 with Windows 11 fully updated. I don’t think the case is the issue.
Thanks for your message. For the pad thickness and size, it’s best to start with a standard thickness like 0.5mm or 1mm and adjust based on your needs. Since you’re new to this, consider testing with a smaller pad first and see how it performs. Let me know if you need more details!
Everyone uses the same thickness; they’re not pads and are meant for CPU/GPU. For the easiest setup, go with Kryosheet—it’s straightforward. If you need more flexibility, the PTM7950 works but installation can be tricky (I’ve used PTM for GPU and Kryosheet on CPU).
I understand the concept, yet everyone uses the same GPUs and thermal pastes. Why do only a handful experience these problems? Most GPUs should last years with the original paste. I saw on my last single fan GPU that the heatsink might shift slightly on the PCB during handling, which could cause paste runout. That’s why I replaced it and re-applied the paste. This shouldn’t happen with more common, longer-lasting GPUs. Edited October 15, 2024 by leclod
Runout confirmed, yes, that's correct. Likely another factor is at play. Edited October 15, 2024 by leclod
Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to give the kyrosheet a shot.
