Running tests on an unusual laptop.
My Asus ROG G750JM came in summer 2014 and performed well until I switched to Windows 10. At 15, I had no computer experience and ended up replacing the drive with a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. After reinstalling Windows 10, I faced frequent crashes—screen going black or unresponsive except for the cursor. Geek Squad insisted on replacing the drive and charged me. I tried Windows 8.1 but they refused it, forcing me to pay. My friend installed an OEM Windows 7 Professional, which worked fine. Later, Windows 7 also started crashing with read/write errors. Eventually, the SSD became corrupted and I had to replace it. I switched to Linux (Ubuntu), which functioned well, but then again faced read/write issues. Now I’m stuck with Ubuntu on my SSD, limited storage, and unsure if it’ll run Windows 8.1 properly. I’m hoping someone can help diagnose the problem or test Windows 8.1 accurately. I also want to know if my SSD or hardware is the issue. If I can’t get a legitimate copy, maybe a cracked version would be useful for testing later. Thanks for your time.
Thanks! Here are some suggestions. If you really need Windows, installing 7 might be worth considering.
The issue seems resolved—make sure you have the sticker with the code on your laptop. Reinstalling should work fine, and using your Windows 8 key for Windows 10 will be sufficient if needed. Edit: For better understanding, switch to Windows 10 and use your Windows 8/8.1 key when prompted.
Sounds like a bad drive controller or corrupted firmware, with the first Win10 install not functioning due to driver support (or the lack thereof). I'd look into taking the laptop to a local PC shop and seeing if they can test for that.
I've also removed the recovery partition, yet I haven't utilized it.
