Hello! I’m still getting used to this setup but I recently installed the F4-3600C18-8GTZR G.SKILL 2x8GB 3600MHz RAM. I’m using an MSI B350 Tomahawk with a Ryzen 5 1600. I’ve dealt with several issues over the past year: my motherboard only supports up to 3200MHz, while the CPU claims it can go higher. XMP profiles 1 and 2 cause a black screen, so I reset the CMOS manually. Changing the RAM speed to 3200 didn’t help. I’m looking for guidance—should I upgrade the CPU or motherboard? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The CPU and board are the main issues here. The first-gen Ryzen struggles with high-speed RAM. Just enable XMP, set the frequency to 3000 or 2933, and that should resolve it.

Zen1 struggles significantly with rapid RAM access. This was a recognized problem with Zen1/Zen+ at the time, limiting performance because Zen relied on a direct 1:1 mapping between its RAM clock and the InfinityFabric clock. DDR4 technology has advanced considerably since the B350 validation, making it unlikely the board can reliably run at 3600Hz without a BIOS upgrade. A B550 with a 5600X might be compatible if you update the firmware, but verification is necessary.

The board should handle high frequencies—some users have confirmed 3800–4000 MHz on similar systems. Hardware reports also show validations for 4900 DDR4 on the B450 Tomahawk Max. Early models can push RAM frequencies far beyond 3200 MHz, though IMC limits often come into play. Why would I upgrade if the RAM isn’t already stable at 2800 MHz? It’s usually the IMC that restricts performance, not the hardware itself. People have successfully run over 3200 MHz on their X58A UDR3. Based on what you’ve shared, it’s time to consider a used 3600, 5600X for $80–100, or a 5800X3D for $200–250 depending on your budget.
