If you choose to virtualize, keep in mind several requirements must be met. Many larger games will need a GPU and its driver, which may require two GPUs for two virtual machines. Your motherboard or CPU should support either Intel's VT-d or AMD's Chipset for IOMMU functionality. You'll need sufficient CPU cores and RAM to handle two virtual computers along with the hypervisor. It’s important to locate USB ports across different IOMMU groups so each VM can access a keyboard and mouse. If you encounter error code 43, especially with NVIDIA GPUs, be aware that the workaround may not always work—some GPUs simply don’t perform well in virtual environments. There are additional challenges, but these are the most immediate issues I’ve faced.
At least that’s what I experienced.

Could VMWare behave differently? I haven’t tried it.

It seems you're seeking a split-screen approach rather than a LAN setup. Both options are becoming less common. I have Flatout 2 with a mod/program that opens two windows for it, and you can connect them via LAN. Halo CE also offers something similar, making me think the MCC collection might support split-screen and co-op features. Perhaps examining the specific game would be useful?
