Hello everyone, I recently assembled a new PC with these specifications: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk, Ryzen 7 5800X paired with Bequiet Dark Rock 4 cooler, 32GB RAM at 3600MHz, Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Turbo, a 2TB PCIe 3x4 boot SSD, and a 4TB SATA SSD for gaming. I also installed BeQuiet Pure Base 500D with five fans—two front inlet, two rear exhaust, one on the CPU, and another on the back. I purchased these parts during fall/winter 2021 and upgraded them over time (CPU first, then CPU, RAM, GPU, and SSD later). I installed Windows 10 after replacing every component.
Energy costs have risen significantly lately—especially in Germany, where prices are over 9000%—so I’m trying to reduce consumption wherever possible. With solar power available on my property, it helps when the sun shines, but I enjoy using the system at night as well. I want to be prepared for winter when solar output drops.
I observed that my CPU reaches up to 4.3 GHz during light tasks (like 1-2% load), while my base clock is 3.8GHz. I couldn’t find a way to lower it automatically for energy savings. I thought AMD and other parts might handle this, but I’m curious if there’s a better option.
My Windows power plan balances performance and efficiency: monitors turn off after 10 minutes, and the PC enters standby after 30 minutes. In Advanced settings, I set the minimum CPU performance to 1% and maximum to 100%.
Any suggestions on reducing power usage would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Ghz isn't the solution! To conserve energy, Ryzen CPUs shut down most cores, keeping just 1-2 active during idle times. This gives you a dual-core effect, and for responsiveness, boost those 1-2 cores higher. It still saves power since running just a few cores quickly uses less than waking all at once. To maximize savings, enable AMD chipset drivers on your PC and use "AMD Ryzen balanced" instead of the standard Windows option. Also, configure the CPU to operate in ECO mode within BIOS.
Even at 4GHz continuously, during idle mode it uses significantly less energy compared to when it's running under load.
