RTX 4090 Gaming Trio 24G scored lower after two years
Hello,
I’m facing a problem with my 4090 recently that hasn’t been easy to solve. A few years ago, after installing the GPU, I ran some benchmarks and found my score to be average compared to other components. Recently, I cleaned the water cooling system and dusted the fans, which helped reduce the CPU temperature during gaming. I wanted to verify if my GPU and CPU were performing as expected, but my results dropped significantly, and I’m still unsure what’s causing it. It seems my CPU score has also decreased.
I’ve looked in forums and tried troubleshooting for days, but nothing seems to work. I’ve done the following: cleaned and drained the loop (temperatures look normal), updated the motherboard BIOS, set the GPU to "Gaming BIOS," enabled the resizable bar, turned off VRization, disabled Afterburner and Rivatuner, used a single monitor, kept 2 RAM sticks instead of 4 (no difference), overclocked (recent score shows higher clock speeds for both CPU and GPU), turned off G-Sync, and ran Memtest86+.
I also tried turning off the fan and not installing any drivers. The scores improved slightly, but not enough to be confident. If anyone has more ideas, I’d really appreciate it!

Update your post with complete hardware details and operating system information. Provide the power supply specifications, including make, model, wattage, age, and condition (original, build, refurbished, used). List the disk drive specifications and their current capacity. Include information about all connected peripherals. Specify whether the network is wired or wireless. Mention any background processes or changes such as new apps, updates, configuration adjustments, or disk space usage.
Update your update to feature complete hardware specifications and operating system details.
Drivers and BIOS can certainly change performance numbers, either security changes, or maybe they prioritized ray tracing performance over rasterization. Give Port Royal a try as well, a single benchmark isn't that definitive.
Updated motherboard BIOS, updated GPU drivers, have you checked for any GPU vBIOS updates? Generally a last resort, since it is somewhat risky, but I know Nvidia did struggle with the 50 series drivers causing 30 and 40 series performance issues. Might be taken care of in a later release of the BIOS.
Now the GPU clocks don't match between your two screenshots there. Have you attempted overclocking? Or is this just the vBIOS switch on the card?
When overclocking you have to verify performance results, not just see the higher clock frequencies. GPUs can have recoverable errors which will impact performance, but not crash. Basically, sometimes the higher numbers actually have worse results. The real key is consistency, try backing the card off a little either way, see if the score improves.
I will try Port Royal and get back to you.
I haven’t checked for a GPU vBIOS update, but I can consider that if needed. I thought about doing it before posting but chose to wait now.
Yes, I tried overclocking after noticing the score difference. The current overclock improved the benchmarking GPU score. See the link below for a comparison of non-overclocked scores.

Hi Everyone,
It seems the operating system was somewhat heavy, but I managed to achieve better performance through overclocking compared to two years prior. That’s an unusual situation, because I usually stopped most background tasks during benchmark tests on the older OS. It looks like something was still active and consuming resources.
