RTX 3070 on PCIe x1 3.0 performance remains consistent regardless of tasks.
Hello everyone, The MSI RTX 3070 I recently purchased began operating at PCIe x1 3.0 speed inconsistently. About four days ago it worked fine for a few days, but recently when trying to play Forza Horizon 5, my FPS dropped significantly—often below 30, even reaching zero at times. What’s unusual is that even with the lowest game settings, benchmark scores remain poor, around 40 FPS max on the RTX 3070. I’ve tried numerous fixes: checking drivers via DDU, reinstalling them twice, updating BIOS, cleaning dust from GPU and PCIe slot, adjusting power settings to high performance, resetting BIOS defaults, removing the CMOS battery and reinserting it. I also reviewed every possible configuration in NVIDIA, Windows display settings, and game-specific options like V-Sync or frame limits. I turned the graphics off and on again. My system specs include an AMD Ryzen 5 3400G, Gigabyte B450M S2H MSI RTX 3070 (8GB), Crucial 2x8 16GB at 3000MHz, HP EX900 M.2 1TB, Samsung EVO 860 500GB, WD Black HDD 500GB, and Corsair 750W 80+Gold PSU. I’m aware this setup could create bottlenecks, and I’m planning to upgrade to an AM5 configuration soon. Despite all efforts, the issue persists. Please let me know if you have any advice. Thank you.
Examine the PCI traces at the bottom of the card. Verify there’s no harm to the gold fingers. Which motherboard are you using? Does it include a second PCI-E port? If nothing appears amiss, test the card on another motherboard or PC. Should you still face the same problem, bring in the card for a refund or have it inspected by RMA—indicating damage.
Ryzen 5 3400G works with PCIe 3.0 and may function as an X8 based on the installed components or board. The mention of 1x suggests power settings are optimized for peak performance. Check the NV Control panel for details.
Have you considered switching the graphics card to another PCIe lane on the motherboard?
I own a Gigabyte B450M S2H motherboard. No signs of damage were seen on the GPU or the PCIe slot. It's running at full performance settings. This board features just one PCIe port for the GPU.
Since there’s no additional PCIe slot on the motherboard, the next option is to try the device on another computer if feasible. The card might be incompatible with your system or could have its own hardware issue.
The GPU BIOS update might help, but it could also cause problems depending on your setup. Check compatibility before proceeding.
Resolved by switching to a previous BIOS release. For anyone encountering this problem later, before attempting hardware removal, follow the instructions from this thread. If you recently upgraded your BIOS, consider reverting it to an older version. (The process is similar to upgrading—download, insert into USB, flash via BIOS, and always check your manual.) Appreciate the assistance!
