Hey, last week I purchased a Cisco 1811 router from eBay. When trying to connect via serial, the terminal displayed random characters. The seller asked me to send an image of my current PuTTY settings (speed 9600, data bits 8, stop bits 1, no parity). After a few emails, they recommended using standard speeds like 1200, 2400, or 4800. I tried those but it didn’t work. I have a flash card reader and thought maybe erasing the removable card through my PC and reinserting it would help. Or perhaps updating the files would resolve the issue. Someone could guide me through this?

The CF card remains intact, holding the ios image that’s not easily found. Any problems with the flash or picture would cause it to enter ROM mode and display a clear message. The settings you shared are accurate—9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. You don’t need to include this info unless you’re configuring serial in Putty or Tera Term. What device are you connecting to the router? If using an USB adapter, reliable performance comes from good quality adapters with a FTDI chipset.

The issue lies with the router's data speed configuration. You're right, using a DB9 to USB adapter costs around $50 from the local tech shop, which seems like a solid investment.

It's unusual to change the console speed settings. If that's the problem, remove the compact flash and then turn on the router. It should switch to ROM mode and display a prompt like "rommon>". From there, you can proceed with the password reset process and remove or reset the startup configuration or baud rate.

No luck at all, it keeps generating random nonsense even when the flash is off.

Essentially, most of what's left is verifying the correct COM port is chosen. Consider using another serial port or adapter. Check each baud rate individually.
