Router performance lagging behind modem speed and inability to connect devices to the modem. Assistance needed.
You're experiencing a common issue with network speeds depending on the device you connect to. Your gigabit internet might not be fully utilizing your router's capacity when using a PC, especially if it's running older software or has limited bandwidth. Connecting directly to your modem bypasses the router's limitations, allowing higher speeds. To improve WiFi performance, consider updating your router firmware, optimizing channel settings, or moving closer to the router. For simultaneous use with a PC, ensure both devices are on compatible networks and try switching between them.
I'm using 802.11ac with my router. The device I have is https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nig...00R2AZLD2/. When connected directly to the modem, it shows 900 Mbps, but only 400 when plugged into the router. Also, the router stops working if I connect my PC to the modem. I need a switch to avoid this issue.
Are you experiencing slow performance when connecting to Wi-Fi while using the PC?
It seems you're questioning the presence of bandwidth restrictions on your router. You're also curious about its history and whether it affects all connected devices. Let me help clarify that.
It might have been better to stay quiet. This topic isn't exactly within my area of expertise (consumer routers). A bit of research suggests checking for firmware updates, restarting or resetting the router, and removing other network devices to identify bandwidth hogs like Windows updates. Beyond that, I can't provide much further assistance. Regarding Wi-Fi 802.11ac at 5.0GHz, you should be able to reach speeds over 1Gbps if your device supports AC standards. If the wired connection works, it should also boost wireless performance. Good luck!
The router is limited to about 700 devices, as you recall. Switching QoS to dynamic or disabling it might help. A client with the same problem also restored their wired speeds.
