Router connection functions properly but lacks internet access.
Common connectivity problem. Yesterday it worked fine, but this morning and all day it stopped. I can reach the router locally, yet no internet access. We’ve managed our bill with Cox, and usually when they cut it off, a splash screen appears in the browser asking for payment. Checked the router settings—nothing changed. Restarted the router and modem several times. The only change is adding a media hard drive to the router; it holds video and audio files but isn’t part of the network. All lights on the router and modem remain consistent, so I’m unsure if the device simply lost internet access while keeping local wireless active. Any suggestions? I could replace the router for testing, though returns aren’t available for modems. Should I update the firmware?
Can you connect to devices using IP addresses? For example: 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS server). If yes, likely the problem involves DNS settings. Adjust your computer’s configuration to use Google DNS as your preferred servers. If not, the issue may lie between your router and modem or with the ISP network—maybe someone accidentally inserted a cable cutter somewhere.
