I believe the slow internet and poor gaming performance are due to my internet service provider, Verizon. This year they had to replace my router because it was malfunctioning. Can I get a router like the Cisco Linksys E4200 v2 and stop dealing with this? Or is there a lengthy process involved in connecting the router to them?

They provide a modem instead of a router. While many modems perform similar tasks, routers aren't suitable for modem use. If your internet isn't working well, consider upgrading your plan for better speed or switching ISPs.

If you receive the recommended device, you're likely to see improved performance compared to your current Verizon router.

The setup was flipped around... What you wrote is for a router, which won't function like the Verizon modem you already own. You need to link the router to your modem, not swap it out. This won't fix the problem since the issues lie with your current modem. Just address the Verizon modem or switch to another provider.

Consider crafting your own router instead of purchasing one.
