The types refer to different categories of motherboards, such as Crosshair, Maximus, Strix, and Rampage, each indicating a specific performance or design focus.

The exact motherboard models take precedence over the board series names. Crosshair represents the premium AMD branding, Maximus stands for the premium Intel branding, Rampage denotes the high-end HEDT Intel identity (now largely outdated), Strix refers to the mid-tier offerings that range from budget options to near-ROG quality, and ROG boards are generally the top-tier choice across all brands. Initially, non-Strix models were expected to feature XOC capabilities like LN2 mode, but recent lines have merged these features with Maximus and Crosshair. I should note that aside from a few exceptions, ASUS ROG boards rarely match the performance of comparable models from other manufacturers, so they’re worth considering too.
