The few outdoor access points I know rely on Power over Ethernet. Sealed outlets are necessary, but it’s not feasible to cool an integrated power supply inside a sealed connection.

WiFi extenders are often ineffective in real-world use. They’re usually designed for indoor placement and need a power outlet. An outdoor wireless access point offers a more reliable option, though it depends on your ability to connect Ethernet from the router to the outside. What coverage area do you need? How far should the signal travel?

I just need it set up in the garage and driveway. The router is roughly 40 feet away, but I'm experiencing weak signal there. It's operating on 5 GHz, which I suspect could be the issue. Switching to 2.4 GHz might improve reception, but it would require changing my phone connection every time I entered the garage—something I'd rather avoid. I also have a T Mobile range extender connected to the router that provides better mobile signal, though it still has trouble reaching the garage. I'm considering installing a budget extender inside the garage; if it fails after a year, it's not a big deal. But honestly, I'm not very familiar with Wi-Fi or how these devices work.

The extender should be placed where the WiFi signal is strong. Using it in a spot with poor reception ruins its effectiveness. As @Falcon1986 mentioned, extenders perform poorly even under good conditions, especially when exposed to weak signals.
