From IllFonic Studios [Click the picture for more details] I believe Epic Games or Unreal Engine's Facebook accounts distributed this title, which is how I first learned about it. My interest grew when I explored the site further, focusing on their intended vision for the project. In any major undertaking, a solid strategy with clear guidelines and rules is essential to maintain consistency and direction. Here are some key points that convinced me of the game's potential:
In the brief excerpt from their mission statement page, they presented an idea diverging from typical MMO mechanics, offering a real-world experience instead of standard stats and progress bars. This vision resonated with me, making me feel like I was part of something special.
The developers behind this project are IllFonic Studios, who have previously worked on titles like Nexuiz—a FPS game that once existed on Steam but is no longer available. They're also involved in Star Citizen as an external partner, having contributed to Bioshock 1 and 2.
More details about the game reveal a focus on depth and atmosphere, aiming to move beyond conventional combat systems and level structures. The narrative elements are designed to feel fresh, drawing comparisons to titles like Guild Wars 2 but with a more immersive tone.
The developers emphasize a desire to improve upon current trends in MMOs and RPGs, addressing issues like repetitive mechanics and shallow storytelling. They aim for a darker, more atmospheric experience reminiscent of classic settings like Elder Scrolls or Diablo, possibly even darker than expected.
I’m eager to see if this game delivers on its promise of revitalizing the RPG/MMORPG landscape. If you're interested, I recommend checking out their official site and watching a recent Twitch stream for firsthand impressions.
It seems like this could be a really interesting game, eager to learn more. I’m hoping it isn’t tied to a subscription model, otherwise my chances of purchasing and playing it would be very low. --edit-- Checking their online store on the website—it’s quite pricey! (For example, $40 USD for the smallest house they have, and over $400 for the second largest, with the biggest currently listed at no price visible)
Free servers and paid gold options are available. It seems the gameplay will remain consistent everywhere. I’m aiming for a low-tier house because I expect to play stealth or thief roles, which depend more on class choices and progression. Also, I don’t want to spend a lot of money before trying out the game.
I hope they avoid the entire "classes" concept. I’d like it more like Skyrim, where your character can pick any class you want—flexible enough to switch as you go—and even combine different classes if you prefer.
They’re launching the game in phases, much like Star Citizen is doing. They emphasized that development keeps going even after the sixth stage is complete. New cities, regions, and features will keep arriving for you. I’m hoping they maintain this approach. I saw a Twitch stream and the creative director seems to be advocating for meaningful changes in the gaming industry.
Following the interview, it makes sense to discard all our assumptions about the game. It’s not about creating a World of Warcraft or any similar title.
