I think I'm the one who's not getting it right. I had an X870-P WiFi but couldn't post it, so I attempted a BIOS flash and didn’t succeed. When I returned the board, they gave me an ASUS TUF Gaming X870-PLUS and still can’t get the BIOS update working. It seems I might be doing it incorrectly. I've used three different USB drives formatted on Windows and Mac, but only a steady LED lights up while I hold the button, then stays on without changing. This happens on both boards, making me unsure how to do the flashback properly. I've tried with and without a CPU (Ryzen 7 9800X3D) and RAM (Kingston Fury KF548C38BBK2-16). IMG_3397.mp4
The picture doesn't show the 8-pin power connection, but the motherboard uses a 24-pin interface which is necessary for BIOS flashback, even without the CPU. The USB drive needs to be formatted as FAT32.
Checked USB compatibility for FAT or FAT 32 updates. Reviewed motherboard details and confirmed Ryzen 7 9800X3D support from the beginning. CPU Support bios list updated accordingly.
I've attempted BIOS updates with and without the CPU pin, but the results remain consistent. I explored BIOS flashback after the machine failed to POST. After using a CMOS reset and testing various RAM slots, I turned to BIOS flashback again. The experience was the same across both motherboards, making me wonder if I'm performing the flashback correctly or if I'm simply unlucky with two failed attempts.
I've worked with many BIOS updates on ASUS boards without problems. Is your USB drive set to FAT32?
It works as expected. I repeated the process with the CPU pin in place and the same outcome occurred. I press the flashback button until the LED appears, then release. Holding it down causes rapid blinking until I let go. The LED remains steady regardless of how long I keep it on.

On my MSI board, the BIOS flashback didn't function properly with all USB devices. Only the older USB2.0 drives worked, though not every single one. My USB3.0 flash drives stopped working completely. Given the board's built-in CPU support from the start, it seems more likely a PSU or CPU problem rather than a motherboard issue. A typical oversight is that the back panel switch might be off, especially if the PC shows no power at all. Also, a tripped circuit breaker or a dead power outlet could be the cause. Make sure the power button is correctly connected to the right terminals. Have you tested the board outside the case first? This might help identify any internal shorts or interference.
