Your old drive configuration from version 2.7.2 should still work with version 2.8.1, though you may need to rebuild it if the installer changed any settings. The core files remain compatible, but double-check for updates in the new release notes.

I understand this has been done before on OPNsense. It seems possible on PFSense too. Instead of reinstalling 2.7.2, you could simply update from there. I found an old PFSense config file that looks quite similar to my OPNsense setup. By changing the interface names in Notepad to match the correct ones, everything functions smoothly.

i have messed around with it abit more with some other drives i had around and i get the same results. tried some new sata cables too. im starting to think the sata controller has gone bad. i did record the install process as it fails, seems to be alot of spam of retries before it just gives up
