I collected multiple outdated drives using Mac OS Extended format that I need to transfer before converting them to NTFS. On my Mac (2007 MacBook 3.1) I can view the drives easily, but moving files to a Windows-compatible drive is challenging. I formatted an external HDD in FAT since it was the only Windows option in Disk Utility, yet I receive a confusing "Unknown error" when trying to copy data from the Mac internal HDD or the FireWire Mac drive to that FAT disk. Do you have any suggestions, perhaps a method to enable ExFAT support?

MacFUSE can receive NTFS support, but I believe the simplest approach is to transfer the files to a network share. The target filesystem becomes irrelevant since communication happens over SMB.
