Restore lost storage on your Windows system.
Hey everyone, a while back I set up some old drives just for Windows storage space—no parity, no mirror. It’s like a RAID0 setup. These drives hold movies and shows I don’t want to re-download. But my motherboard got damaged from spills, so I had to replace it. Windows didn’t recognize the partitions after the swap. It’s possible the short circuit affected one or both drives, even if they still appear as a single larger drive. I tried EaseUs Data Recovery but only got partial data. I’m unsure how to get Windows to treat them as separate drives again. If the space is gone, I’d like to work with a Linux live USB instead, in case someone can assist. Thanks ahead!
Welcome to raid0... striping for performance. There are no assurances about data recovery if something fails. I believe you won’t be able to salvage those drives unless you install Windows on a fresh drive and attempt the addition. I’m not confident in software RAID within Windows. I’ve managed to recover drives when they were initially configured on a rog strix Z370-E mainboard. When it crashed, the same BIOS/controller was present as on a Z390-E. That’s why they recognized them. Generally, for recovery the controller must be able to interpret the RAID settings on the disks. Manufacturers usually stick to compatible controllers, allowing you to reuse striped disks with the same brand. It’s not guaranteed, but it gives a possibility. I’ve also observed success and failure on HP, Lenovo, and Dell servers. RAID0 is only recommended when speed is prioritized over data safety. EDIT: and I’m back on the sidelines again—it seems. If Windows treats them as a single disk, try initializing it if that hasn’t been done yet. To use them separately, you must format each disk individually to erase the RAID information from the boot sector.
