You’re interested in buying a used laptop that includes MS Office Pro. Since it’s used, you’d like to retain at least MS Office functionality but perform a clean reset to remove unused items. There should be options to wipe the system while keeping essential apps intact. Just confirm what licensing requirements apply and whether a fresh license can be applied after the reset.

If you're completely reinstalling Windows or resetting the system, you're essentially starting from scratch. You can't choose to retain your license or anything else. It's unclear how someone would sell a used laptop unless they first wipe it clean.

I’m not confident they’re tech-savvy enough to reset first. It’s possible they’ve already erased their files. Appreciate the reply—I’ll need to decide how to proceed once I can interact directly with the laptop.

Inquire about their MS Office product key. If they possess it, you may reactivate MS Office following a fresh installation.

The other feedback is accurate. Before selling the device, ensure the storage is securely erased. If the buyer acquired the office equipment and intends to keep it, they may be able to reinstall it and obtain a replacement key. Additionally, there are tools available that can recover local keys from the machine if the key is lost prior to wiping the drive.

It's possible Office is included in the recovery image, meaning a factory reset will reinstall it along with it. If not, they should provide a demo disc containing the Office key for reinstallation and reactivation.

Yes, Office keys are linked to your Microsoft account in a similar way to how Windows keys work today.
