Resolving the CPU overheating problem (12900KS) with a simple solution
Hi, I recently upgraded my CPU to an i9 12900ks with Z690, paired it with an ASUS ROG Strix AIO (Corsair H150i RGB XPRO), and decided to stick with my older 360mm AIO (Corsair H150i RGB xt Pro). When I first installed the CPU and ran a stress test like Cinbench R23, the package temperature jumped instantly to 100°C, and the CPU throttled down to 3GHz to prevent damage. I realized my Corsair H150i was showing signs of aging, but I hadn’t expected it to be this severe. After opening the case again, I noticed the cooler wasn’t fully touching the CPU because the AIO wasn’t designed for the LGA 1700 socket. There was a gap between the backplate and the screws, reducing contact. To fix this without buying new parts, I placed a few sheets of paper between the motherboard back and the AIO cooler, increasing pressure and improving contact. The results were impressive: temperatures dropped from 100°C to a stable 3GHz across all cores, with only 80°C on the stock voltage and no overclocking needed. I even managed to overclock the P cores to 5.3GHz and E cores to 4.2GHz without extra voltage. The in-game temps stayed between 50-55°C. Using LGA 1700 brackets and custom 3000 RPM Noctua fans helped, raising my cooling score from 121 to 180. It’s worth noting that the cooling performance improved significantly after modifying the backplate. My main concern now is whether this temporary fix is safe long-term with just a few sheets of paper between the backplate. (See the picture in the description.) Or should I consider replacing it with a better solution?
They mentioned a $6 Corsair kit for that AIO, but I think it's better to just install the right parts. Paper works for now, but accurate hardware is preferable. The difference in height between LGA 1700 and 115x/1200 comes from the IHS.
I believed I connected it, sorry. https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories...CW-8960091 Do you possess that kit? If yes, which way are your standoffs oriented? One side of the threads is longer than the other. https://help.corsair.com/hc/en-us/articl...700-socket It seems they intend the extended thread bundle to rise and face you when viewing the socket. If they're reversed, tightening may be difficult.
