It seems another advantage of using a VM is its ability to preserve a state before making changes. I’ve often saved a snapshot at least ten or eleven times since version 6, and currently version 8 updates itself automatically without issues. It’s becoming more reliable over time, though I wouldn’t depend on it completely. This applies specifically to the VM environment, which worries me about how it would behave on a regular system that frequently restarts without service interruptions.
