Hi, I wasn't able to locate the exact reference for 3070 but TI generally suggests a maximum of 290W.
Why is it recommended to use 650W or more for 3070?
My calculations indicate that my CPU consumes around 65W (possibly higher in the future), and even if the GPU uses just 250W, I still have about 350W remaining.
I understand other components also draw power, but the total load from the motherboard, four sticks of RAM, one SSD, and a HDD is likely under 50-70W. Also, the SSD and RAM operate at 3.3V, which is different from the GPU's 12V. It seems the PSU choice matters more than just picking 3070.
By the way, I'm using a Corsair CX650m and when I bought this PSU I thought it would be safe to choose something that could handle 50% of its full capacity... but now it seems insufficient.
The recommendations for power supplies from video card makers usually consider the most extreme situation—completely loading all parts on a decent PSU. Therefore, in general you can safely reduce the required power by roughly 10 to 20 percent, provided you use a reliable power supply and aren't running heavy stress tests at once.
