Hey everyone, I’m still trying to figure out why my recent upgrade didn’t seem to help much. I upgraded from a 2070 Super to a 4070ti, and I play Rust. I was aware it’s not the most efficient game, and it’s definitely CPU-heavy, but I went ahead with the purchase because I got tired of low FPS. Here’s what my rig looks like: GPU – MSI 4070ti (Ventus 3x OC), CPU – Ryzen 7 3800X, RAM – G-Skill Trident Z 3200 (XMP enabled, running at 3200 MT/s), PSU – ASUS Tuf Gaming 1000W, HDD – Samsung 980 PRO NVMe. This weekend I’m still frustrated, averaging 45-80 FPS even when friends with older hardware get over 100 FPS on higher settings. I haven’t tried running the system on a 1080p monitor yet; I’m currently using an UW 3440x1440 display and even with DLSS it doesn’t improve my performance. I’m not sure if I’m doing anything wrong, but I really wish I could switch to a proper 1080p setup for gaming. My machines are mostly for development, so the UW is useful. I have two 1440p monitors, one of which isn’t UW. It makes me wonder if there’s no universal solution that works for everyone. Should my current configuration still function well? Or should I just move to a dedicated 1080p machine? Also, I’m concerned about using cheaper motherboards – maybe an X670 would be better if I upgrade the CPU? Thanks for your time!

I mean check core by core usage good chance non is maxed because rust is a TERRIBLY coded game that runs like garbage. Sure a 7800x3d will probably give you some more fps but well it wont do too much and the fluctuations will still be there its just a badly coded game

Switching to 1080p wont help if your cpu is already at it limits at 1440p. You could wait for the 5500X3D or get a 5600 non-x now.

You're operating at the limits of your clock and memory speeds. In my own tests with Overwatch, even at high FPS, the low frames dropped to nearly 30% of the average while my GPU was only at 45% and CPU at 70%. A clear sign of RAM constraints. To confirm if you're limited by speed, check how your CPU and GPU utilization looks when you set the game to its highest settings. If both stay between 40% and 60%, it suggests RAM is the bottleneck. The 3800X uses Zen2 architecture, and over the past eight years, Ryzen processors have seen significant improvements each year. Higher resolutions always add more demand on all components. I upgraded to the 7800X3D with 6000MT RAM recently, which gave better balance in usage but didn't noticeably boost FPS.

Games can only divide themselves to a certain extent across multiple cores, which is why the 7800X3D remains the fastest gaming CPU available and it features just 8 cores. The 5700X3D or 5800X3D would greatly enhance your gaming performance as demonstrated here. Your CPU isn't leading the rankings, but the 5800X3D could give it a much-needed boost.

That's a great discovery! I'm having trouble finding a 5800X3D nearby. I understand the 5700X3D won't perform quite as well, but it should still be a noticeable improvement over what I currently have. It's a much more affordable way to upgrade compared to getting everything for a 7800X3D.

The cost for the 5700X3D is $420 NZ, while the full 7800X3D upgrade comes to $1770 NZ—clearly a big jump. I’m planning to get this board to make room for Zen 5 later if needed: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MBDASU2...Motherboar. It's funny that the "Intel Gamer Days" sale includes an AMD M/B. Also surprising that the 7800X3D is slightly more expensive than the 7900X3D by just $30, but I wonder why.

I’m excited about a solid 50% boost in FPS, now hovering just under 100 with everything fully optimized. I haven’t found a more efficient option yet, but I’m confident similar results will come. Really pleased with this decision, and thanks @Bagzie for recommending the 5800X3D! It feels like a multi-generational upgrade with just a CPU change.
