Ok, I'm looking at upgrading to an intel cpu and motherboard. I know that I will have to do a fresh complete reinstall, but the question is this. Will I have to buy a new windows 7 license? I have heard yes and no answers to this question, and I don't understand what all the confusion is. Is it yes or no? Some people have told me no, you just have to do a complete reinstall because of the drivers and whatnot. Some have told me that yes, you have to get a new license because it's technically a new computer (even though the "old computer" wont be in use, and the operating system will be wiped from the hard drive and SSD before reinstallation via optical drive) So which is it? My copy didn't come with the hardware, I purchased it online from newegg as a disc. I am doing this for school because my current cpu doesn't actually meet the minimum standards for my online schoolwork, and is in general a giant piece of crap I wish I'd never bought lol.

Can't assist with that, but I'm going through the same transition from AMD to Intel and seeking guidance.

You simply remove the operating system from your previous device and install it on the new one, then proceed to activate this version of Windows. By right-clicking your computer, selecting Properties, and choosing the activation option, you’ll be prompted to contact Microsoft and confirm the reinstall. I’ve performed this process with the same Windows 7 Professional 64-bit version multiple times.

If you request a reinstall and mention it's just a replacement, you shouldn't have to pay anything. Just because you're on a tight budget doesn't mean you can't afford another $100 for a new disc.

They’ll likely ask a few questions and then turn it on via the internet. The whole setup is quick, taking just 2 to 3 minutes.

It depends on the situation, but you should be able to reinstall it if needed. Just make sure you have the right parts and follow the steps carefully.

You can obtain a tool that retrieves your key from the registry and it works fine. Perhaps you'll need to handle the phone activation later.

I possess the activation key. The problem is that from Microsoft's perspective, it will be treated as a brand new device even though the previous one is being moved to storage (possibly permanently).

It's fine, you can apply one license across several devices at once. However, I wouldn't suggest it.

They said tech support isn't helpful, only phone calls or chats are available. I've been waiting about 15 minutes for the chat to start, and now I'm frustrated. It seems emails aren't working either. I waited 30 minutes and got told to try again later. Ugh...
