AMD's orrrrrrr could enable suppliers to design a tailored BIOS for Ryzen 4000 processors on chipsets lacking support for multiple CPU generations.
It’s obvious there’s no technical reason to abandon older chipset support or break commitments. Flash memory capacity isn’t a technical concern since firmware can include any CPU features AMD chooses—like dropping Summit Ridge Generation to add Vermeer support without issues.
Currently, I’m okay with the board switch. Adding PCIE Gen 4 support is already significant. Think about future GPUs and storage devices moving data at the highest possible speed. AMD is delaying some CPU features to extend AM4 support, so it seems they’re ready to transition to a new chipset soon.
There are several factors influencing AMD's decisions regarding Ryzen 3rd generation on older boards. * Insufficient room in the BIOS chip to accommodate multiple generations * a push for uniformity and PCI-E 4.0 compatibility for graphics cards and first-generation M.2 slots regardless of board choice * manufacturers' interest in refreshing their product lines and increasing profits, avoiding support for outdated boards * The motivation behind motherboard updates is often financial, aiming for newer models while phasing out older ones * AMD likely anticipates continued demand for B550 boards, which would allow a complete refresh of their offerings... volume purchasing could reduce costs on components like sound chips, network ICs, and VRM MOSFETs * Moving forward, it seems manufacturers are planning to upgrade their boards, making it easier to sell newer models and earn more * In the second consideration, AMD aims for absolute assurance that all boards supporting Ryzen 4xxx will meet PCI-E 4.0 requirements for the first few PCI-E X16 slots and M.2 ports. If they delay full support for certain boards like B450 or x470, users might face issues such as blue screens or crashes due to incompatibility * There are motherboards with large BIOS versions that can still accommodate Ryzen 3, but many users lack the knowledge or patience to update their BIOS or conduct thorough research * It's possible AMD is hoping for a situation where customers purchase Ryzen 4xxx with inexpensive B450 boards and outdated BIOSes, only to discover later they need to upgrade the board for proper functionality.
